What is your oracle home set to? Either you can patch your 8.1.7 or otherwise somepeople do it on a separate OH. Did you look into oraInventory logs?

Along with what others have said have you considered using a
post-process PL/SQL routine to clean the data once it is loaded into
your table? Either you pay the price up front of cleaning I need to strip out all spaces from a string when loading data via
sqlldr direct load.
Is this possible? What would be the control file syntax?

The more disk groups the less disks would be striped and mirrored within
