RMAN can receive commands through PIPE, but backup pieces are created by shadow process (they are named channels) and they can't be send to pipes. To send backup pieces from RMAN directly to tapes, you need some Backup Agent. The LSSV (Legato Single Server Version) is shiped with Oracle and can help you.
