i'm interested about the issue if the "new" i/o-scheduler (at first shipped with kernel 2.6) has any significant impact on the oracle performance.
I'm still using kernel 2.4 and kind of displeased about the bad i/o scaling: i.e. when running a complex report (yep, no dwh..), which causes a lot of disk operations. This process gets then almost all i/o resources, this means all other sessions have a problem to execute their (tiny) disk operations and get slow. So the scaling of the i/o resources seems to be very inefficient.
Using the Oracle ResourcePlans, so that the process gets a nice level 25, improved the scaling a little bit, but it's still not satisfying at all.
Kernel2.6 includes a new programmed disk i/o-scheduler with various options. Does anyone experienced the described scenario and as a result of this already migrated from kernel 2.4 to 2.6? What performance gain could i expect then? Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.
