I never had any luck using async io in 9i under Linux. There are
other versions of Oracle under Solaris Sparc where I've had similar
problems. Lack of async io will certainly be a drag, but it shouldn't
be fatal. You can route around it with things like multiple db
writers. IO problems like these should keep him from getting the
best performance possible, not cause him to get the worst
performance possible.

In 8i, sort_area_size can get you quite a boost.
