It will work if you are going from 32 to 64 and vice versa if the
platforms are the same. See Metalink note 341880.1 "Migrating Oracle9i
Single Instance Database from Linux x86 to Linux x86-64". The process
is the same going in either direction.

There is a more generic note:

 <NOTE:62290.1> - Changing between 32-bit and 64-bit Word Sizes
