It is not inefficient. Moreover, it runs faster vs 64 bit in some cases.
Running 32 bits apps on x86_64 is NOT a bad idea; it is better vs running 32
bits apps on 32 bits OS on x86_64 hardware.

Services Standalone on SLES9 SP3 x86-64 on AMD Opteron x86-64 hardware
Thank you for all the replies. I just would like to highlight that I'm
concerned about running 32-bit version of Oracle Application Server 10g
Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2) Reports Services on SLES9 x86-64 on AMD Opteron CPUs
and NOT the database and not Oracle Enterprise Manager. And the reason of
my concern is not that we couldn't get it running (I'm sure after doing
some research it will run on almost anything :) ). I worry that it
generally very inefficient to run 32-bit software on 64-bit OS/ hardware.
So maybe we're much better off simply buying some powerful Xeon based
machine(s) for AS.
Also, are you guys aware, if Oracle has any plans to release 64-bit version
(AMD) of Oracle Application Server Reports Services ?
Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Vitaliy

Hi Vitaly,
i had setup two Oracle 10 systems on same hardware.
Only difference was one was 32 bit the other was 64 bit (Software and
Oracle and PRIMULAB II)
Our PRIMULAB II laborytory software was 10% -slower- on 64 bit.
So if you don't need more than 2-4 GB main memory you will waste
performance.
kind regards,
Toni
PS: Fujitsu-Siemens Primergy TX200 S2 4GB main memory
Dual Xeon 3,0 GHz EM64T, IntelĀ® E7320 which shows up as 4 CPU.
dual 150 GB dual channel SCSI no RAID used
SLES 9 SP3+online updates, kernel 2.6.5-7.252-bigsmp and Oracle EE
10.1.0.5
SLES-9-64 SP3+online updates, kernel 2.6.5-7.252-smp and Oracle EE
10.1.0.5 64bit
