Antw: [suse-oracle] Bad performance on Proliant DL580 G4 2007-06-01 - By Ralf Dieterle
Back Hi Herman,
We changed from HP DL 580 G3 to G4. Former CPU was XEON 3,66 GHz, now CoreDuo2 3,00 GHz. We changed only to have more parallel CPU-Power with more cores.
So you should a have a closer look on what you want to achieve with this switch to the new machine. We have a high load always at the same times a day. Up to 50 running Processes at the same time. With only 4 CPU's a lot had to be queued. Now we have 4 DualCore = 8 CPU and HT for each Core makes 16 usable CPU's and the highload times are gone.
The new CPU's seem to be exactly as fast as the old 3,66 ones. If you need more speed for only one process, you can either try to get a 30 GHz-CPU ( which ist still not available :-)) ) - or try to get your SQL's running by using the "parallel-option".
Last but not least: Performance normally is not that easy to improve. Try to find out what statspackreport tell you to do or jump in the database and find miserably executed SQL's. Perhaps you can help your optimizer with some new/changed indexes. Till then analyze all Indexes and tables - could be done online when productiontime is not that heavy.....
Greetz Ralf

>>> <Herman.Maseberg@(protected)> 28.05.2007 21:25 >>> Hi, recently we migrated from IBM xSeries 445 Suse SLES 9 (32 bits) with 9 GB RAM to HP DL580 G4 SLES9 (AMD64/EM64T) with 16 GB RAM, in both cases attached to a external FC storage (Hitachi AMS500) running SAP 4.7 on Oracle 9.2.0.7.
In boths cases we use ext3 filesystems mounted with the writeback option.
After migration we don't see visible better performance and I suspect some of the hardware components (HBA or ethernet cards) is responsible for the unexpected performance.
The question is, anyone have the same servers or configuration and have some tip to help us improve performance?
Thanks!
